Tim Berners-Lee: The year open data went worldwide

The power of open data and what it can do for us. I certainly will spend some time on the subject... The OpenStreetMap.org is one of the applications close to home but also helping collaboration around the globe. Tim Berners-Lee includes the example of the use and usefulness of open data for map services in Haiti.

Thought that bikes are bikes? IBDC - INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE DESIGN COMPETITION

Media_httpwwwibdcawar_qcbdh

Great bikes - despite the site being a bit awkward, the bike design concepts and products are more than wirth to check them out.
If the site proves to bea bit tedious and you don't mind the German photo titles, this may prove to be an easier way to enjoy the creativity of bike designers...

Facebook - not a social network, more a social directory

Corporations jump on the bandwagon of social networks. Four years ago Andrew McAfee wrote the book "Enterprise 2.0: The Dawn of Emergent Collaboration". Just recently, the Salesforce.com founder and CEO Marc Benioff asked in his techcrunch post, "why isn't all enterprise software like Facebook?"

And obviously software vendors of company directories and LDAP using services add social features to their functionalities.

It is an obvious evolution, because Facebook isn't really a social network. It is more like a classic people listing service for your social life - a social directory service. Facebook has taken the good old company directory and made it a public directory with social features. It is centralised and locked, very much like the one at work, though you have more freedom changing and using it for your purposes.

iPad - so what?

Media_httpimagesapple_fokch

The name isbetter than the iSlate as was speculated before the launch. Would I neeed one? No. Would I want one? Without a camera, probably not even at half the price. It could have been a great gift for my mother, as she has started to use an Ubuntu Netbook some time ago. But I suspect, the small notebook still feels strange to her. She is using the Asus for wikipedia and Skype Video to help with the homework of her grandkids. And sometimes Gmail. If it weren't for the camera, the iPad might have been for her...
So apart from Apple fans and gadget addicts, who is going to use it? Once the novelty has worn off, will the iPad collect dust in the living room?

Growmedia.ca's stunning and inspiring website

Growmedia-ca-website-backgroun

...with a fixed background image. Well I don't want to go into details, here is the link to their website explaining what they did, and how to do it including the full javascript. Just open it and scroll.  We at tickerTXT / Cidentigo will certainly try the suggested code in combination with blogger templates. This is also the kind of inspiration for the website relaunch of tickerTXT (now quite overdue) we have been looking for.

BeeCMS template, version 0.98g is basically ready for production and download, with that kind of background handling described by Growmedia.ca, we can turn BeeCMS into something like QueenBeeCMS :-)

BTW Canadian Growmedia has also other great articles describing other very useful javascripts such as their Gallery code mix and some great tips for website projects. Have a look and enjoy. And thanks to Grow. for
